Sunday in the sun

Today was a beautiful day. It was sunny in London, so we went and played in the park!

Michael and his flatmate Phil came along, we brought the hula hoops; the only piece of sporting equipment we had was a tennis ball. So we were throwing that around and having a few laughs - all of us trying to catch and throw with the opposite hand...

Then Stevo showed up with cricket gear, so we had a bit of a go at Backyard Cricket. I definitely prefer bowling to batting. Fielding wasn't so bad, but might just stick to Netball ;)

We had an ice cream and lay in the sunshine, talking about Scottish independence and the FIFA World Cup and how New Zealand is better than Australia - the usual banter with that crew...

To top it off, Emma and I finished the afternoon by going for a run with her coworker Graeme (who had brought his kids down earlier.) He is helping us train as he runs marathons and is generally more knowledgable than us on the whole running front. We ran around some beautiful parts of Wimvledon Village, a gorgeous estate and the common with a lake...

Once we'd finished, we sat in the afternoon sun, drank soda and lime, and had dinner on the green outside the pub! Now I'm really tired but so happy to have had such a great day in the sunshine...

Loving London!

A week in the French Alps...

It's 10:54pm on 1st February and I'm three hours into the 20-hr coach ride home from Moütiers, France. We have been away from London, skiing in the idyllic setting that is Valmorel, for the past eight days, and it has been one of the best holidays I have had.

It all started months ago, with the question from Em via her coworker Michael, if we would like to join them on the ski trip he was organizing. I said yes, never one to miss a chance to travel! Nadia said yes too, and after deposits were made, there was no turning back. The whatsapp group was the countdown, with the boys (especially Michael) über excited about the whole thing - from ski wear to snow level, we got reports on the lot.

And suddenly, it was the week of the trip! We planned meet Friday afternoon at Victoria station, jump on the coach and awake in France! It was a little more prolonged than that, but we had a jolly old time siting at two tables at the front of the coach, chatting away and eating assorted goodies from Sainsbury's. We got off the coach in Dover and onto the ferry to Calais, during which we had a drink and toasted to our trip. In France, we all fell asleep with intertwined legs under the table and jackets for blankets, for a hearty 6 hour sleep. We awoke somewhere further south to a beautiful sunrise. and it was only 6 more hours until Moütier, and an easy 45-minute bus up to Valmorel!

Driving up the winding mountain road and stepping out into the fresh mountain air, the whole ordeal was made completely worthwhile. It's different air up there, and the sun was shining. It was beautiful, like a painting...

We collected our bags (plus Michael's additional four!) and found our chalet - which faced the Altispace piste and overlooked the town! We claimed sleeping quarters and hastily unpacked, then headed down to get our skis, boots, poles or boards, ready for the day ahead!

We found a restaurant for late lunch - some had Tartiflette, Nadia and I shared some delicious pizza, and the owner brought us liqueur to finish the meal, which went down a treat... We got food and drinks from Spar and headed home, and began celebrating the successful start to our skiing adventure (by listening to 90s hip hop and watching videos of cats doing silly things on TV!)

And then the skiing began! Some were clearly more enthusiastic about hitting the slopes, but we all made it out - some heading to lessons, Michael and Stevo heading over yonder mountain range to test their abilities; Em and I pushing ourselves down the steepest blue slope and having to stop five times because our "ski fitness" was practically non-existent. By the bottom, Em was the same colour as the snow! Then she swore in a small French boy's face and we continued with our day...

I was quickly impressed with Em's and my own ability to ski without looking like an uncoordinated fool... We didn't crash (aside from one awkward moment getting off a chairlift) and took on some pretty big slopes! I was constantly conscious of my left knee and the fact it often became quite stroppy and refused to
maneuver the ski, but eventually it settled and we had a grand old time.

Tuesday was the most magnificent day on the mountain - blue skies and fresh snow, no wind and sunshine. Michael (on his snowboard), Stevo, Emma and I decided to go to the other resort, which involved going up one chairlift, skiing down to the next lift, up and down (with some steeeep parts in the middle) to eventually reach the top of the ridge that looked down into St Francois. It was magnificent - the view from the top was 360 degrees of mountain ranges, extending out to Mont Blanc and beyond... The runs down into St Francois were so fun, not too steep and not too icy, we had a really good time - we even skied all four together at one stage!

The other highlight was, of course, our Ski Family dinners. It started out as a casual suggestion from Steve, of "shall I make Spaghetti Bolognese?" Which in itself was delicious. Then Esther and Angela raised the bar in spectacular fashion with some delicious chicken dish... Ryan made the world's biggest bowl of guacamole, then Carla impressed with a hearty vegetable soup and amazing sausages. And the final night, Michael made a chicken curry - from SCRATCH!!! Thankfully Em, Nadia and I weren't called upon to cook, or people would have been enjoying cheese on toast and tuna from a can... We'll practice something for the next trip...

The final day of skiing and we almost all made it on to the slopes together! With Angela and Esther missing, we all met at the top of Altispace, got a Ski Family photo and we all skied down the slope together! I even was confident on my skis to film everyone as we went down the mountain!! It was so fun, we had an amazing day. Emma and I even dominated the red slope with banked turns and JUMPS!!! Then we continued down the red slope leading to our place!!! Very exciting - insomuch that we didn't severely injure ourselves...

And then the time came pack our gear, return our skis and bid farewell to Valmorel... It didn't feel like a week had gone by, it was far too quick. But like most holidays, you take what you can and enjoy the memories.

We reminisced the whole way home on the bus, on the ferry back from Calais to Dover, on the tube back to East Acton... And into the week - we caught up on Thursday to reminisce and drink to France and our great time away... We hardly realised how many in-jokes we had created in a week of living in each other's pockets, but there are so many!

So, all in all, a successful, exciting, funny, energetic trip to the French Alps with a wonderful bunch of people...

I can't wait for the next trip, wherever it may be!

Oh, what a month!!

Well, I don't know where to begin...

Because this last month really has been a whirlwind of change!!

Basically, I got offered my DREAM job! I am now working in promotions and marketing - for an international media company!!!

In an ironic coincidence, I started on November 14th - one year to the week that I left Trends and life as I had known it (seemingly my whole life!) changed in an instant...

The same has happened again, one year on. Except this change is so positive and amazing; I am so proud and so excited to have got this position!!

So now I'm working in the hustle and bustle of inner city London. No more 33 minute tube ride to work, no more hour-long lunch breaks; it's 55 minutes door to door with a 9 minute walk from the tube to the office. But it's a fast-paced place and constantly buzzing, and that's contagious! The strong personalities and work ethics show and it really is a joy to be around such like-minded people.

My team is pretty wicked - my boss is American, my neighbor is an Aussie, and the two girls opposite are English and Scotish and oh so adorable!

There is a gym which I have joined for only £10/month; there is a canteen which makes yummy food which is subsidized by the company (my two poached eggs on a bagel is £1.50 every morning, my flat white is £1.25!) and there is a great ethos of the company as a whole.

My role is based on a newly-launched digital strategy, which is growing and changing as we learn of all the possibilities it has. As we all work together and I take over the responsibilities of what the job needs, we are falling into a good step and are making one kick-ass team. It's very exciting :)

And I am still keeping up my dancing and netball (although the season ended on a massive sour note, I will not elaborate BUT will seek revenge next season!) Greek dancing finishes next Tuesday and we have our final class - performing the Hasapiko and the Hasaposerviko (I think that's how it is spelt!) - wish me luck!!!

Anyway - this may explain why my blog has been a little light, but it certainly has been the most exciting whirlwind!!!

The daily commute

Working in London is really quite an experience. I don’t know how many places in the world it is really like this...

I remember once upon a time, I never wanted to be ‘one of those people’ – they act like Lemmings, hustling and bustling in the stations, pushing and cramming onto the Tube, reading papers in awkward angles while nearly intimately bumping up against strangers.

Surprisingly, it’s not as awkward as it sounds.

Being a commuter, getting on a full train, going into a smelly and hot underground tunnel, surviving the ride without breaking a sweat (like some men clearly do…) and coming up above ground into the day, miles from your home, is actually pretty cool.

What I noticed today

On my lunchtime walk today, I found another gem. In amongst the hideous 1980s architecture of box-like office spaces, one building managed to survive on Picadilly…

This is a beautiful but derelict building on the corner near The Hilton Hotel… It looks so grand and wise, but it’s boarded up and dusty.

I wonder and hope they are making it into something beautiful. I’m going to watch, and wait…

The job hunt is over!!

It goes like this:

After 1 month, 20 days, 3 hours and 56 minutes...
After applying for nearly 100 jobs, and hours trolling through job websites until my eyes blurred...
After repeating to many people - including my bank! - that I was 'currently unemployed' (which hasn't happened since I started working at 15)
After meeting with four recruitment agencies...
After interviews, offers, doing my budget, and knowing what I wanted...
After so many frustrations...

The job of finding a job is finally over!

I am happy to report that I received a phone call yesterday afternoon, offering me a job at The Kennel Club - the job I really did want and was quite excited by...

I start on Monday 21 October! Yay!!!

Working in Acton

This week I have been temping for Laura (flatmate) while she is away at the Circus. She works for Construct Recruitment, based in Acton, which has been awesome - I'm surrounded by Kiwis!!!

However, hightlight/my downfall is the delicious bakery next door... Great coffee, amazing sandwiches, cakes and slices and macaroons... There is really no hope for me while I am here!
